Jon and Julie Engle
Welcome you to EDGEWILD |
We've enjoyed sharing this lovely
spot in the heart of Minnesota's beautiful lakes area with vacationing families
ever since we bought EDGEWILD in 1974. Before we settled on this place, we
looked at several resorts around the area. (And as most Realtors will tell you,
location, location, location! was the key) The moment we turned the last corner
and drove into this beautiful secluded location with 100 year old pine trees
and shimmering birch, we fell in love with EDGEWILD. (We think you will
too!)
EDGEWILD was literally carved out
of the woods on the North Shore of West Fox Lake in the mid 1930's. We know
very little about the original owners except that they brought a saw mill over
here across the ice one winter (before there was even a road back here) and
built half a dozen small fishing cabins from wood that was cut right
here. |
In those
early days, the old cabins were politely referred to as "rustic" and "quaint"
and EDGEWILD was basically a place where people came to fish. The cabins were
very basic, with an ice box, a wood cook stove, an outdoor pump, and an
outhouse. Electricity was added in the early 1950's.
The
resort changed hands several times in the early years from the 30's to the
50's. Then in 1955, Neil and Arlene Huber bought the resort, then called
EDGEWILD "Retreat". They made many improvements during their 17 years here,
including installing running water and adding bathrooms in the
cabins.
In 1976,
Edgewild resort was hit by a tornado, which toppled many trees, but
miraculously spared most of the cabins. With wood from the downed trees, Cabin
#7 was built. In subsequent years, we added hot water and a shower to each
cabin, installed a new sewer system, and did lots of cabin remodeling between
repairs. Then in 1987 we decided it was time to take the plunge and replace a
cabin. We tore down one old cabin and built a new modern loft-style cabin in
its place. Our guests raved about (some even fought over) the new cabin #5! So
over the next several years, we replaced one cabin per season, each a little
better than the last, and even added one extra cabin.
The
majority of those guests are families who come here to get away from the hustle
and bustle and enjoy the great outdoors. Most are from Minnesota or the
Midwest, although some have come from far away continents! Every summer we have
a few young honeymooners, lots of Grandpas' and Grandma's, and every age in
between. Over the last few years we've had lots of family reunion groups or
just groups of friends who come at the same time and rent multiple cabins,
which is a wonderful way to vacation, especially with kids. And most of our
guests have been here before! With over 80% repeat customers (some of whom have
been coming here longer than we have!) we've gotten to know most of them very
well and have made many dear friends along the way.
We hope
you'll be one of our many satisfied repeat customers too. We look forward to
having you as our guests at EDGEWILD soon!
